Yuki at New-Westminister

So with the trip over, Yuki and I have been settling into a working life; it’s taking a lot of time out of our lives but we’ve still found a few good photo opportunities. Among our many after-work walks, we went out to New-Westminister to walk along the waterfront and get some photos.

We were trying to do some portraiture and fashion photograph, something I’m not at all good at. Mostly I walked away with a need to do some on-line research. I confess that it isn’t my favourite way to photograph someone, but that’s the best part of having someone like Yuki, someone who pushes me outside of my comfort zone just enough to be a little better with every baby step.

Mom and Dad came for Thanksgiving and we drove out to the Golden Ears park. This a park that requires a car to get to so I was happy we were able to make it. We did the shorter Lower Falls trail.

The trail was pretty smooth going and not to strenuous. I didn’t get very good portraits but did feel like I was capturing the fall on the West Coast with the picture above, in a sort of change of seasons when it starts getting cooler and the shadows get longer.

On that walk, Yuki took my old D60 and we swapped lenses with each other a few times.

After attempting to go hiking three times and being foiled by the weather, we made it out to Lynn Headwaters Regional Park and hiked out to Norvan Falls. We made good time, 3 hours in and 3 hours back which surprised me as it seemed pretty far (7km each way). We took Turtle with us, who enjoyed Subway sandwiches and bulk nuts for lunch. We didn’t stay long though, because we hadn’t brought enough food and were still hungry (plus it was a little cold and the sun was going down quickly).

In November, we did an outing to Richmond where we walked along part of the dyke between the city and the airport and then another one downtown to see a craft fair in Yaletown. We had the times wrong so we arrived when it was just being set up so we ended up looking around the Roundhouse community centre. The first train to cross Canada on the CPR is there and we climbed aboard. This was another instance of a place I’d been wanting to see for a few years and finally getting out to see it. While we only spent half an hour or so there, it was a nice little gem in the city to find.

Sometimes I feel like the city could use a good map and guide for it’s own citizens to tour the city they live in and claim to know but haven’t really seen all of. As with all other cities, there are so many places I’ve found by wandering around that most people don’t know about and there’s still so much more to explore. Maybe that’s another mini project coming up…?
