W District has got it all if you are looking for a sensory overload. It has got to be Bangkok’s best night market. Especially if you’re a foodie in need of a food fest. So much more than just a market or a beer garden, it promotes itself as a “hangout space of art and urban lifestyle”.

Let’s get this straight. We’re not talking your bog-standard night market filled with cheap clothes and even cheaper tat. This is the sort of place that has been considered long off the beaten track. It’s existence is shared in hushed whispers. Well fortunately (or unfortunately) it’s now no longer a secret! You’ll want to share this food heaven with everyone you meet.

Heavenly Food

I seriously cannot stop calling this place food heaven ‘cos it is. You’ll find it hard to match restaurants of this quality in Bangkok. With more than 50 food stalls, choice can be a bit of a problem. Obviously, there’s Thai but there’s so much. Just a little heads up, Thai food is relatively expensive here. But do you really want to go for pizza in Bangkok? Thin-crust base with piping hot mozzarella. The freshest sashimi from the Japanese stall. Even with Thai spice, feeling like some jalapenos? Or if you need to temper it down after all that hot spicy? Go British with Cornish pasties encased in the softest, fluffiest pastry.

Stroll around the different stalls. See which one draws your attention and pull up a pew. Don’t be surprised if a complete stranger comes and shares your table. It’s just that sort of place. Great to get talking to everyone.

To help the conversation along, grab a couple of ice-cold Chang beers as the sun goes down. The atmosphere of W Market is conducive to hanging out and taking it all in. Along with its current title of the “trendiest place in the Pra Khanong area”, W District homes a thriving art community.

The Art of W District

W District stimulates the senses. All the foodie units might have awakened your smell and taste. However long before you’ve even started eating, you’ll be feasting on sculptures and vibrant street art.

An enormous interior and exterior art space, Hof Art Space is all about showcasing the work of local artists. International artists emerging onto the Thai art season collaborate through HOF Art Residency. With workshops and a ceramic studio, the gallery is always buzzing even if there are no current exhibitions.

You can admire the artistic sights as you wander through the W District. The Beer Guardian will keep an eye on you as you keep an eye on the enormous mural of The Leaning Tower of Pisa. As W District opens from 4.00pm, head early to take in the visuals. The aesthetic morphs as the sun goes down. Chinese lanterns illuminate the gardens giving the artworks an otherworldly feeling.

How to Get to W District

Located in the Phra Khanong area of the city, W District is at Sukhumvit 71.

Take the BTS to Phra Khanong station for the easiest way to get there. From the station, the market is a 3 minute walk. Head southeast along Sukhumvit and you’ll smell it.

The alternative is to take a taxi or grab a car and ask for Sukhumvit Soi 71. Jump out and step into seventh heaven.
