While growing up, I used to haunt any library or collection of books I could find, and was happiest with my nose buried deep in a book. I remember wishing, when I was about twelve, that I could simply carry around an invisible bag filled with all the books I came into contact with, so I could just reach in and lose myself in a dream world whenever reality came knocking (which, coincidentally, was always 4 hours before finals).

Unsurprisingly, I was filled with a special kind of numinous awe when the first generation of Kindles came out.

It was as if hallowed Amazon.com wizards had heard my innermost desire and brought this magical device to life.

I’m on my second Kindle now, and take it quite for granted, but I’ll never quite forget that emotion — that spellbound moment when I realized that the world would never be the same again.

It’s great to be alive in this time, with the rapid pace of technological innovation almost guaranteeing that I’ll have many of these moments again. And thanks to the rather prescient descriptions of brilliant futurists and science fiction writers — I can point to specific inventions that might leap off the pages (or e-paper :)) and come to reality before my eyes —…
