The New Setting That’s Keeping Your iPhone From Charging
On Monday, October 24th, Apple released a new update: iOS 16.1. Although not a monumental update, 16.1 does bring a few features people were waiting for, including iCloud Shared Photo Library, Live Activities, and Wallet Key Sharing.
However, there is another feature that hasn’t received much attention, but I think it’s worth pointing out.
It’s called “Clean Energy Charging”.
What’s Clean Energy Charging?
According to Apple Support, it’s a new feature that attempts to “reduce your carbon footprint by selectively charging when lower carbon-emission electricity is available.” Over the past few years, Apple has put a strong emphasis on the work it’s doing to reduce its environmental impact, so this feature comes as no surprise.
And without any additional information, it sounds like a reasonable feature. It doesn’t affect how you use your device, and it helps the environment. Win, win. Right?
The Catch
Of course, there is a catch. First of all, if Clean Energy Charging charges your iPhone “during times of cleaner energy production”, that means it’s not charging during times of “dirtier” energy production — when the grid is pulling energy from sources like coal or natural gas…
