The Web Turf War Nobody Wanted
WordPress meltdown puts half the web in jeopardy
When it comes to the web, most sites are using one of only a few platforms (a home of sorts). In the early days this may have been Geocities or AngelFire. Basically it was a place to put your website. These days nearly every site is using Amazon’s AWS, Google Cloud, SalesForce, Microsoft Azure, or WordPress.
If what you just read sounds like jargon, that’s okay because you only need to know this fact: WordPress powers nearly half the Internet. And now its co-founder is throwing such an epic hissy fit, it is literally endangering the future of the web.
If you haven’t heard of WordPress it’s a powerful Content Management System (CMS) powering any type of website. That can be a blog, normal website, or storefront. It’s very powerful and old. WordPress came onto the scene in 2001 and over time it has grown into such an easy system to set up that it grew in use. TimeMachiner runs on WordPress because it’s a great product. You can literally go from “I just bought a website address” to “My website is ready for visitors” in less than 30-minutes. According to ColorLib 472 million websites use WordPress, which is 43.3% of all the websites on the internet. WordPress has a 62.7% share of the CMS market, which is more than 10x greater than its closest competitor.
