As we approach Maslenitsa 2021, here are some photographs from last year’s festival at the Nikola-Lenivets art park in the Kaluga region.
Maslenitsa is one of those festivals that mixes up the pagan and the Christian. Like Shrove Tuesday in the West, it’s associated with Easter and Lent, and involves pancakes. But this performance in 2020 uncannily evoked the more ancient traditions, both the innocence and the barbarism of the Slavic pagans.
