After eighteen years of successful preservation projects across the world, Adventures in Preservation (AiP) is forming an applied preservation center. This is in response to the growing need for specialized assistance and training in the heritage arts and sciences.

This effort is being initiated at Bannack State Park, Montana in August 2019. Adventures in Preservation is collaborating with Bannack Preservation Institute on a pilot study to test concepts for methodology and outreach that will used for the center. With the success of the Montana project, AiP will then move forward with expanding our International Center for Applied Preservation (ICAP) to additional sites.

With a mission to offer experiential and place-based learning opportunities for heritage professionals and students worldwide, AiP is creating the center to promote diverse and applied research in historic building materials, pathology, and sustainability, initially utilizing the unique historic, cultural, and environmental resources of Bannack State Park.

Through a series of workshops and specialized assistance programs, a consortium of heritage professionals will offer technical expertise and field training in historic building materials preservation, archaeology, and cultural landscape stewardship. Research and applied preservation at Bannack will not only help sustain the features and character of this western heritage site, but will also provide information to address preservation issues worldwide.

Bannack State Park is maintained by the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife, and Parks as a ghost town and site preserved in place within the high desert and wilderness of western Montana, offering a one-of-a-kind field laboratory for the study of this historic built environment. AiP’s new concept for applied preservation will ultimately impact each Adventures in Preservation project as AiP continues to partner with communities worldwide. Through this, AiP will continue to promote our mission of connecting people and preservation through enriching experiential programs that safeguard heritage and foster community sustainability.

Support Our Mission

As a cultural resource advocate and administrator of international field projects, Adventures in Preservation supports the advancement of place-based education through Bannack International Center for Applied Preservation. AiP anticipates the gains to come from applications of inter-disciplinary research, and collaboration with environmental sciences, to better understand the complex relationships between the natural and historic built environments.
