As the pandemic is still impacting our lives here in the US and around the world, the field of historic preservation has partially moved online, with several key events now streaming live.

Thanks to our Board Member Tara Cubie, Adventures in Preservation (AiP) has put together a brief list of the key events, virtual conferences, and webinars to come in the field of historic preservation.

PastForward 2020: National Preservation Conference

— October 28–30, 2020

By offering a virtual event this year, the National Trust for Historic Preservation aims to make this year’s conference as accessible for as many people as possible and representative of the breadth and depth of great work going on across the preservation field. They are also building content and inviting expert speakers to ensure we’re providing you with practical, relevant information to meet your evolving needs in the pandemic and post-pandemic periods.

This year’s conference themes are “Resilience and Relevance.”

APT & National Trust Joint Conference 2020

— October 3–7, 2020

The annual National Trust conference is Canada’s largest heritage learning and networking event, held in association with the Canadian Association of Heritage Professionals. The organizers are planning virtual conference sessions, in parallel with some in-person events that would be held in Edmonton, Alberta (Canada) if meetings become possible again by that time.

NAI National Conference 2020

— November 2020 (dates TBA)

The National Association for Interpretation (NAI) has made the decision to host the 2020 NAI National Conference virtually. They are still putting together all the details, sessions, and awesome networking opportunities. The virtual conference registration opens on August 1.

Save Wright 2020 Virtual Annual Conference

— November 11–14, 2020

While the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy’s Buffalo conference has been postponed to 2021, the organization is planning a virtual conference for this fall. It will take advantage of the unique format to showcase hard-to-reach sites and convene panelists who might not otherwise be able to come together in person. More details to come soon.

ICCROM Lecture Series

— Ongoing, past lectures available online

The series is run by the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM), established in Rome, Italy in 1959 and created in the aftermath of World War II in response to widespread destruction and the urgent need to reconstruct cultural property. In 1956, a proposal was adopted at the 9th Session of the UNESCO General Conference in New Delhi to create an intergovernmental centre to study and improve restoration methods, and so ICCROM was born.

Here’s a selection of online webinars and panels:

California Preservation Foundation’s Webinars

— Upcoming and recording of past programs

The California Preservation Foundation (CPF) focuses on online learning and digital platforms for education, training, and networking.

About Adventures in Preservation (AiP)

Adventures in Preservation (AiP) is a non-profit connecting people and preservation through enriching cultural heritage travel and hands-on education. AiP was founded in 2001 by two women with a great love of historic buildings and a strong desire to travel and understand the world. While perusing the travel section of the Boulder Bookstore, the Volunteer Vacation section suddenly brought everything into focus. Judith Broeker and Jamie Donahoe combined their goal of saving historic buildings with the concept of experiential travel, and created AiP’s hands-on preservation vacations.

Work started on several sites in the U.S., and as word spread, requests for help began to pour in from around the world, underscoring the great potential of using volunteers to restore historic buildings. In supporting community-based preservation initiatives, we discovered that our love of old buildings could translate into environmental and economic sustainability for communities.

AiP is picking up the pace! As our hands-on experiential travel becomes more popular, we have new projects, new partners and initiatives to keep you excited and involved.
