Writing for “Adventures of Ted, The Fire Engine Series”

Writing stories for my boss with weekly deadlines is so much fun! Of course, it also means a lot of thought, writing, drawing, deleting, rehearsing and voila, the final product is out for the week.

My boss loves vehicles, loves the color red and loves heroes. So when I was given the task of coming up with a character based on who a series of stories would run, it did not seem as daunting as it should seem. I thought to myself what is that vehicle that can be red in color and be a hero? It seemed pretty obvious at the time — A Fire Engine. My boss can be hard to please most of the time, but he readily accepted this one. Of course, I was thrilled!

Before, you read on, you must know that my boss is my son.

Having finalized the character, I realized that there needs to be something unusual about him that would attract anyone’s attention. After all who likes a story with some boring, predictable character. That bit needed some digging and then finally the idea dawned — “A fire engine who is terrified of fire!”

Over the last several weeks, I have been living the life of Ted, The Fire Engine and letting my imagination run wild. Ted is almost a family member now. Everyone knows him well at home. I started to think that it is time to give Ted and myself a break and start off on a clean slate. I thought it would do my fans (if any), some good, if I give them a break, so that they would miss him and like him more when he comes back after a break.

But my boss vehemently disagrees with his tears weapon! I tried to reason with him that viewers would get bored and need to get a break from the same character. All in vain! He refused to give me permission to conclude the series for this season on the pretext that the stories were made for him and not for a larger audience. Therefore, only his orders shall prevail!

My hands are tied, but my mind needs a break. It needs to start on a clean slate and get refreshed before getting back to the cute little fire engine that I created.
