Should you Create a Subreddit for your Server?
Today I wanted to talk about Subreddits and if you should create one for your Discord Server. In case you don’t know, Subreddits are communities within the platform of Reddit. Reddit is a place where people come together over like minded issues, ideas and hobbies to discuss them. It is quite similar to Discord but instead of instant messaging, users make posts and people can reply to them with what they think. There are some really awesome Subreddits out there for advice as well. Subreddits come in all different shapes and sizes, so the question is, do you need one?
I’ll start off by saying that generally a lot of the popular Subreddits will start off as a subreddit, and then add a Discord server for their community. As Reddit doesn’t have great capability when it comes to Instant Messaging, Discord allows these communities to have a better flow of communication if they’re trying to have a conversation, especially one on one.
But sometimes communities will start up a Subreddit if they want to have a more open space for sharing ideas where users can interact as with a Discord server it can get quite spammy. It is important to take into account the type of community you are and the outreach that you have. Reddit is strict on the sort of communities it lets you create, you need to have a specific theme and you can’t be a general community. You will also need a Subreddit name which cannot be the name of another Subreddit so you need to come up with something unique.
If you’re thinking about creating a Subreddit for your server, there are 5 key things you need to take into account.
Does my community have a decent member count?
Does my community have a unique theme to it that requires discussion?
Would my community be willing to participate in a Subreddit?
Do I have enough moderators who are interested in moderating it?
How will it help my community?
With these 5 factors, you need to decide if your community really needs one. A good way to check this is to run a poll and get your members to vote on it. With this you will have an accurate representation of what your community think is good, and that you have the community on your side.
When making your Subreddit, if you decide to go ahead with it, you should involve your moderation team in the process.
