5 reasons why you should maintain a diet diary

Ever heard of a diet diary? It’s a journal where you can jot down all the things that you’ve eaten on a particular day, every single day in order to keep track of your diet plans. But why should you do this? To count the number of calories that you consume via your meals every day. Not to mention the fact that you have the convenience of tallying up your calorie count to see exactly how much extra you’re eating.

Here are 4 reasons why you should start keeping a diet diary

1. It Shows You What You Eat

We’ve covered this before but let us just make one more point — a majority of people on a diet tend to underestimate the number of calories they’ve consumed in a day. However, the truth is that most of our extra calories come from eating in-between meals, something we don’t give an extra thought to.

2. It Helps You Lose Weight

After you’ve jotted down and calculated how many calories you’re eating per day v/s the calories you’re burning, you yourself will see where the problem lies. In fact, your diet plans will show that the foods that you thought healthy actually were actually the biggest sinners!

3. It Helps You Plan Out Meals

In the beginning, your diet diary will help you keep track of excessive calories. But eventually, you will begin to use this diary to plan healthy meals in order to come up with a more balanced diet.

4. It Will Encourage You To Eat What You Need To Eat

If you see your diary full of potato chips and Cokes, you’re definitely going to get an overhaul. Make sure you eat food items from all colour groups — yellow, purple, orange etc. Most people almost always ignore fruits in their diets, and once you see for yourself how there are very few nutritive items in your diet plan, that you are deficient in certain food groups, you will be motivated to bring a change.

5. Food Intolerance Detection

You can go a step ahead and record in your diet diary how you feel physically after eating. This will help you pinpoint the food items guilty of making your nauseous of feeling bloated (if at all) after you’re done with your meals. This may in fact be due to simple reasons like lactose or gluten intolerance.
