Obesity is a very complicated nutritional disorder which involves the accumulation of fats you consume in the form of body fat. Apart from affecting your body’s physical well-being, it also leads to the development of numerous health related issues such as diabetes, elevated blood pressure levels, and other cardiovascular diseases.

If your doctor has diagnosed you with being overweight, you are more likely to develop obesity and other weight related issues and health problems. However, you can control this through proper weight management which will not only improve your condition but also restrict the development of heart diseases. Effective dietary modifications and enhanced physical activity can assist in smoother weight loss. Apart from that, medications and weight-loss surgery prescribed by your doctor is also recommended.

Obesity is a condition that can be developed through several causatives which are listed here:

  • Genetics
  • Lifestyle
  • Physical activity
  • Diet
  • Medication
  • Age
  • Pregnancy
  • Lack of sleep.

Although you have associated with few of these causatives, doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re suffering from obesity. Do keep in mind that these can be counteracted through a proper diet, moderate physical activity and proper maintenance of your body.

If you fail to regulate your BMI and physical condition of your body, you can develop obesity and other health issues listed here:

  • Type II diabetes
  • Elevated blood pressure levels
  • High Blood sugar levels
  • High cholesterol
  • Cardiovascular diseases like heart attack, stroke
  • Breast cancer
  • Rectal cancer
  • Cervical cancer
  • Other forms of cancer affecting body organs
  • Irregular and heavy breathing
  • Disturbing social life leading to depression
  • Infertility and irregular periods among women
  • Erectile dysfunction and premature ejaculation among men
  • Inflammation in the liver
  • Osteoarthritis

Obesity can be measured when your body mass index (BMI) is recorded at 30 or higher. You can calculate your BMI by dividing your weight in kilograms (kg) by your height in meters (m) squared. BMI can help you estimate your body fat content. However, it is just an estimate and not a direct calculation. Hence, it can be used for diagnosis effectively as it is an assumption.
