A message from George Brown, Founder of Aegle Gear:

When it came to design, we were inspired by features in athletic gear that could translate to healthcare professionals.

Uli Becker, the Co-founder of Aegle, and I, have served 50 years combined in the athletic industry: shaping products, or performing as athletes ourselves. For years, we observed athletes and healthcare professionals, researched their patterns, and began to notice similar movements between the two. Both groups stressed their uniforms, encountered a variety of climate, and endured high stimulation causing changes in heart rate, perspiration, and cognitive response.

When designing, we started with Base Gear, something that could be worn under uniforms that would support muscles and manage body temperature. Not only that, but it was important that this layer be comfortable and look good, should the caregiver decide to take off their uniform and use the Base Gear to get in a run.

We knew we had to build something to help the healthcare professional; to protect them, comfort them, last for them.

We spent time studying the movements of healthcare professionals and built uniforms to move the way they did, as we listened carefully to each need. For example, we didn’t just add pockets, but we built pockets that managed space for specific tools. We built a pant that doesn’t pull down when you bend over. We added a zipper fly, unheard of in traditional scrubs.

With so much time spent on Base Gear and Primary Gear, we felt we had to dedicate time to an outer layer. Outer Gear excels in the hours behind a desk, to provide warming comfort, or to protect against weather when meeting an emergency crew at the ER doors. We even added reflective ink to all of our logos making it safer for late shift workers to cross parking lots.

Antimicrobial capabilities were a must. We wanted every garment to protect against common bacteria found in hospitals, which cause 1 in 25 patients to develop a new illness.

We spent almost 2 years developing a fabric that would remind the healthcare professional of the fabrics they’d worn with their favorite sports apparel. Antimicrobial capabilities were a must. We wanted every garment to protect against common bacteria found in hospitals, which cause 1 in 25 patients to develop a new illness.

The fabric had to be soft but durable, rip-stop, and breathable. We coated it with fluid-resistant finish that repels the fluids healthcare professionals commonly encounter on shift. Our fabrics move with the caregiver, and keep their colors without fading, to reduce the need to replace as frequently as with cheaper scrubs.

Even now, we continue to scour the market so that we always deliver the best technologies as they become available.
