We always heard people says ‘go to this URL…’, but what does URL stands for? And is it related to another interchangeable term called ‘HTML’? Are there any difference between the two? Join us this week as we unravel the two acronyms at Aenco Academy #23: HTML v.s. URL?

𝓗𝓣𝓜𝓛

HTML stands for HyperText Markup Language. It is a language used in creating website pages. Many would say HTML is the basic of building web pages, where the customizations of such a webpage will be done inside a pair of arrow brackets (“<>”)

As we add-in some customized elements into the HTML to fine-tune the web page, be reminded that these elements could also have attributes. Attributes, as the name suggested, provide additional traits, or information about the element. Attributes come in name or value pairs.

URL, on the other hand, stands for Uniform Resource Locator. It consists of a protocol name, domain name, and resource path. A visualization of a URL is as followed:

𝓟𝓻𝓸𝓽𝓸𝓬𝓸𝓵, 𝓓𝓸𝓶𝓪𝓲𝓷, 𝓡𝓮𝓼𝓸𝓾𝓻𝓬𝓮 𝓟𝓪𝓽𝓱 ?

The protocol tells what protocol is needed to access the resource the URL points to. Typically the protocol is either http or https. https often refers to a more secured access protocol (the ‘s’ stands for secured).

The domain is a name that is translated into an IP address. Thus, the domain name really points to a server somewhere on the internet. This is the server hosting the resource. In the example above the domain is www.aenxchange.com.

The resource path is the location of the resource within the server the resource is hosted on. In the example above, the resource path is “/referral”. The resource path can be interpreted as a directory.
