Taliesin Space Monthly Funding Recap — May 2019

May showed a slight uptick in funding with $183M invested in 6 companies, but a $1.18B increase in funding for the year if you include SEC filing amendments submitted by SpaceX this month. This brings the total invested in Space Ecosystem companies for this year to an impressive $2.8B (disclosed rounds).

Funding Trends

For the most part, investment this month went into a segment that has remained top of mind for investors — Communications.

A callout is that the majority of investment this month, and a significant amount this year, came from non-endemic investors — a good sign of the increasing palatability of space investment to mainstream investors.

SpaceIL is an Israeli nonprofit organization that dreams of landing the first Israeli spacecraft on the moon.

Loon

Loon is a global network of high altitude balloons used to provide stable internet coverage on the ground.

First Resonance

First Resonance is bringing modern software solutions to aerospace manufacturing. Their first product is a hardware testing platform that allows companies to easily manage, execute, and analyze real-world hardware tests.

SkySpace global

SAS is the first company to plan, build and operate a telecommunication commercial network over Nano-Satellites.

SpaceX (Revision)

SpaceX is an aviation and aerospace company that designs, manufactures, and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft. Newly released filings showed that they raised north of $1bn since the beginning of the year.

Avanti

Avanti Communications supplies satellite communications services for business, institutional, and residential customers. It operates satellite broadband, data, and voice services into Europe. We included this because we believe there will continue to be more interest and activity in the space ecosystem by mainstream finance.
