Drone Mapping for Project Coordination and Communication

Part 2 of our series with DJI on getting started with drones in construction

Earlier this week, we hosted the second edition of our ongoing webinar series, “Getting Started with Drones in Construction”, featuring Ryan Moret, Field Solutions Manager at McCarthy Building Companies and David Benowitz from DJI Enterprise. McCarthy Building Companies is one of the largest domestic builders in the US, specializing in large healthcare education, and research construction projects.

McCarthy Building Companies recently launched a nationwide enterprise drone program

During the webinar, we heard from Ryan about McCarthy Building Companies’ recent decision to launch a nationwide drone program and leverage aerial data across departments for improved operations, insights and ROI. While McCarthy had been eyeing drones for sometime, it wasn’t until the passage of FAA Part 107 that allowed the company to pull the trigger and deploy commercial drones on job sites throughout the US.

“Today, we have just shy of 10 drones out right now flying across the country, and we see that growing to well over 30 by the end of the year.” -Ryan Moret

Understanding the Challenges of Deploying Drones in the Enterprise

During the webinar, we learned some of challenges to adopting drones in a larger enterprise. Ryan shared his experience and discussed some common concerns for companies looking to use drones on the job site, such as training, safety and insurance. Today, McCarthy has drones on more than 10 job sites, but plans to expand operations in 2017 after the success they have seen on the field solutions, BIM, survey, risk management and solar teams.

“Putting any new technology into place can be a lot of work, especially when it’s something like drones that often have safety concerns, privacy concerns…It was something we had to come at very tactfully.” -Ryan Moret

Capturing, Analyzing and Sharing Drone Data for Greater Efficiency and Improved Operations

Integrate drone data into existing workflows with the DroneDeploy App Market

One of the greatest benefits for McCarthy has been the ability to quickly gather, analyze and share aerial data with various teams in the company throughout the course of any given project. From tracking progress, to measuring stockpile volume and calculating distance, drones have vastly improved the day-to-day work on every job site. Commercial drones help keep projects on track and organized from start to finish. With DroneDeploy’s platform, McCarthy has successfully integrated drones into existing workflows thanks to the growing number of apps available on the DroneDeploy App Market such as Autodesk, Box and more.

“At the end of the day, we’re coordinators and communicators. We pull a lot of people together to try to build very complex jobs, and we can’t do it alone. We want the best product for our clients at the end of the day, so communication and collaboration are very important to us.” -Ryan Moret

Generating the Most Value from DroneDeploy’s Platform and App Market

Towards the end of the webinar, we focused on utilizing best practices and shared tips for making the most of DroneDeploy on the job site. Planning flights, capturing and analyzing data, and generating reports can leave users with a lot of questions. In this webinar, we covered some of the most common questions we receive and highlighted great ways to get more out of the DroneDeploy platform so that you can make the most of the latest technology and features of commercial drone software. Learn how you can improve your aerial data collection and extract the most value from your drone maps and models with DroneDeploy’s tools and rapidly growing app market.
