Highlighting Exciting Uses for Drone Maps

During the webinar, Chad and Jim covered tips for flying and capturing imagery, advice for interpreting NDVI data, and walked through many specific examples of how drone maps can be used before and after harvest.

Here are just a few highlights:

Plant health map showing performance differences between nitrogen tests

Chad Colby shared this map of a Nitrogen trial in a corn map, highlighting how to use and interpret plant health data.

“With the plant health map, we were able to clearly pick out the nitrogen program. In the green bands, he’d done a split nitrogen application — half on on the fall, half on on the spring, late with Y-drop. It was pretty exciting for me to start to see this,” said Chad.

Map showing maturity and dry-down differences between soybean varieties

Jim Love shared a map of a soybean test plot where he’s been using drone mapping to monitor crop maturity and dry-down — very useful when preparing for harvest.

“We’ve done this in the past with a lot of people out in the field with clipboards and it’s very subjective. Now it’s more quantifiable and we get a better overview of what’s going on in the field,” said Jim.

These are just a few of the examples that Chad and Jim shared. Others included:

  • Using maps of weather damage to support insurance claims
  • Developing drainage plans using elevation maps
  • Easily calculating stockpile volumes

Your Questions, Answered.

We were blown away not only by the number of registrants for the webinar but also by the level of engagement from the audience. Over the course of the hour, we received over 100 questions!

The most significant portion of the questions we received centered around NDVI and cameras, with attendees specifically wanting to know whether they needed to buy a special camera to get useful insights from drone mapping or whether they could use the standard camera on their drone. Our panelists’ advice to them? Start simple. Learn what useful insights you can get with a basic, affordable Phantom drone first, and then explore from there. [Click to tweet]

“We’ve done a lot of work with the near-infrared, we’ve done a lot of work with the RGB camera on the Phantoms and we’ve seen a lot of success with both systems,” said Jim.

Unfortunately we weren’t able to answer all of the questions on air, but we’ve done our best to consolidate and group similar questions, and answer as many of them as possible in writing. When you access the full webinar recording, we’ll also send you the Q&A document.
