Stories from the trenches — “Getting it Done”

Aeriosense Technologies recently completed a project for a major electric utility in British Columbia — Fortis BC. As part of this pilot project over 100km’s of transmission lines and Right of Way across 5 transmission circuits were inspected in B.C.’s central Kootenay region. Thomas Barter one of the field managers working on that project recounts one of the days working in the field:

“We had over 100 kilometers of inspection behind us when we got hit with an Artic Flow Snowstorm in the high alpine of Rossland, British Columbia with 12 more structures to go for project completion.

Rather than pack up the gear and call it a project Thomas Barter and Thomas Jimenez, the chief pilot on the project came up with a plan to see this project through. This included shoveling their way up 150 yards to the ROW in -10C (14F) temperatures to expose the gravel under 6" of snow to ensure the truck didn’t slip and slide on the way up and down the steep grade.

Once our crew got to the very top of the mountain ridge ROW our UAV crew was able to inspect the last 12 structures in quick order from one take-off point using our propriety autonomous drone software for transmission line inspection which reduced the inspection time and the need for multiple take-off points in the challenging weather conditions.”
