Figure 1. The sun is rising on a Green New Era.

There is land enough for each of us, and yet it goes unused. While the deeds to acres of useful property sit in the files of banks across the globe, so many of us are unable to purchase land of our own. To obtain the land communally remains the only option in a financial market that boxes out too many potential land-owners. We have a responsibility to Earth’s ecosystem and to Human society-at-large to develop all remaining land ethically and in accordance with environmental standards. The separate needs for ethical land development and communal property ownership can both be satisfied by the Aeroaquaponic Farming System.

Our system of sustainable farms will allow a group of people to purchase land together, cheaply develop it into a self-sufficient community, and live mortgage-free in a short period of time. This is the ideal solution for the modern consumer who desires to live more ethically, but presently requires their local supermarket to provide their daily needs, and requires a landlord to rent them a home. By giving us the option of unplugging entirely from consumerism, the formerly powerless consumer is given ultimate control over the economy.

When the largest companies act unethically and control the entire market, as has happened in the year 2020, the consumer has little option but to play into the very system that led to this happening. We are forced by our circumstances to shop at the very stores that perpetuate this system. If the average person owned property (i.e. a residence on a larger communal property) and the communal property were committed to the provision of the daily needs of its residents, the average consumer could break from this exploitative system without delay. This is what we mean by “Unplugging from Consumerism.”

To unplug from consumerism, a consumer or group of consumers, simply needs their basic needs met as a group. The Aeroaquaponics system is developed around the idea of Units of Self Sufficiency, otherwise known as communities with a low-cost, high-yield self-sufficient farm, water production, and ideally also power generation. These needs being met, the consumer could, as a form of simplicity in living or economic strike, live entirely within their small community.

Such a community would be established on land purchased by a group of 5–10 individuals from the previous owner as a simple real estate transaction and, with the collective economic power of such a group, a set of structures would be constructed for the individual and/or collective use of the group. Thereafter, the structures could be sold at a relatively cheap price by any of the purchasers to a future set of people seeking to free themselves from the constraints of the system of rental or complex home ownership and consumerism. In this way, we can simultaneously free ourselves of the basic needs of food, water, and shelter, and thus giving the average consumer more power in the economy and freeing them to pursue more meaningful life goals.

So, what can we, as individuals, do to bring about such a system? Our organization is actively working to determine the pain-points of building a society which ignores consumerism. In the meantime, while we work on this aspect, it seems appropriate for the individual outside of our company (be they a minimalist, an anti-consumer, or otherwise) to begin the process of reducing their own consumption and learning to grow their own food. Likewise, such an individual should attempt to gather a small group of like-minded people who would enjoy building a farming community. We have it within our power to shift this society away from rampant consumption and towards the self-sufficient communities we desire. We can Unplug from Consumerism and let the Green Revolution begin!
