I think we can all agree that for men looking to get into skincare today, it’s difficult to know where to get started.

Does it always have to be this way?

Hell no.

Once you filter out the noise, you can begin to hone in on some key things that’ll make your journey into skincare a cake walk.

In this post, I’m going to quickly show you how to get started with skincare today so that you can stay looking fresh for years to come. All you need are two types of products; cleansers and moisturizers.

Products

In its simplest form, you’ll need to grab a facial cleanser and a moisturizer.

Cleansers

A facial cleanser is necessary for removing all the bacteria, dirt, sweat, and pollutants that your face is exposed to throughout the day. As dermatologist Gary Goldenberg, MD, notes:

“If not washed off, these can irritate skin, clog pores, cause acne and blemishes, and increase the appearance of aging.”

For facial cleansers, I’d recommend starting off with something mild. Sometimes less is more, and this way you’ll be able to assess accordingly whether you want to take it up a notch or stick with what feels comfortable.

Moisturizers

A moisturizer is necessary for reducing the chance of developing extreme dryness or oiliness which helps contribute to breakouts and dry skin. Applying moisturizer creates a barrier on your skin that keeps oils from escaping and harmful outside elements from causing dryness or irritation.

For moisturizers, you don’t have to get too fancy here. My recommendation would be to cop a moisturizer specifically meant for your face. Body lotions tend to be thicker and could be too heavy for the skin on your face, which can potentially irritate and clog your pores.

Routine

The whole point here is to start building consistency with baby steps. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Neither was a five-step skincare routine.

Daily Steps (morning + night):

Step 1. Wash your face using a mild facial cleanser.

Step 2. Apply a moisturizer on your face (SPF for day time).

That’s it.

By incorporating and starting out with this simple routine, you’ll be able to begin your journey into cleaning and protecting your skin. Consistency is key, and once you’ve formed a good habit with the routine above, your next move would be to ease into exfoliates, eye creams, sunscreen, and more.

Above all else, skincare is not a one size fit all. If you find a product/routine that works really well for you, don’t be afraid to stick with it!
