Virus testing? Business, we're looking at you. (And blockchain is here to help)

Let’s be honest. There’s only one way we will get to the kind of testing for COVID-19 (or acquired immunity to the disease) the medical professionals are insisting we need to do to re-open the economy.

Businesses will pay. (And blockchain technology can help them manage the process.)

They have to pay. Local governments can’t afford it. The federal government (well, THIS federal government) won’t do it. And the only other entity besides the fed with the power to print money is businesses. Of course, the fed does it by actually firing up the printing presses. Businesses do it by passing on the costs to us through higher prices.

Testing isn’t there yet. That’s true. According to the researchers we might need three times the testing or more per week to find, isolate, and track those with the disease or past exposure to it. Some are envisioning a scenario where, to be secure, millions of tests are being conducted on an almost daily basis to ensure the safety of the workforce. Regardless of the rosy pronouncements we are hearing, localities can’t get the tests, or the testing apparatus and supplies, or the results, in any manner that says unlock the doors and let the hordes swarm through.

Lessons from our devoted health care workers

And if you think that rate of testing is overkill, keep in mind the vast number of health care professionals, wrapped to the teeth in protective gear, falling ill or dead to the virus and living in constant dread, fear, and trauma that their number is up on any random day. No business can operate like that.

Plus, there’s the issue of the tests themselves and what they show. You could test negative for disease and be infected tomorrow. Or positive for immunity and continue to wonder what that means. Immune for how long?

We will learn more about immunity in the coming weeks and months, but there is reasonable demand to get to work. The problem is, with fewer than 20% showing antibodies in New York City, to date the epicenter of the disease, we are no where near the level of recovery from exposure and presumed immunity we need to achieve to run businesses.

A blockchain enabled app

A variety of tests are being studied, some that could be administered at home and some at the workplace. For home tests, the process can be witnessed over an app and results delivered within the app, secured on the blockchain to preserve employee privacy and to protect industries from fraudulent tests. For businesses large enough, and with tests that produce speedy results, a future can be envisioned where employees show up for work, take a test for antibodies, hang out for ten or fifteen minutes, and get a result on their phones.

In both instances — home tested or at the job — data can follow the employee through the day as that employee meets a friend at a restaurant for lunch, or dashes for a workout at the gym, or meets a colleague for drinks after work, or a loved one for a date that evening. Just open the app and there’s your beneficial report that allows you through the door.

Business leaders must shoulder this burden, partially because no one else is, and partially because liability issues will demand they take every precaution to make sure their employees are not infecting each other or the general public.

The importance of testing can’t be overstated, and neither can the demand for efficient, affordable, and secure data storage of results. If we are racing back to work, businesses must race to employ practices that will keep working safe.
