We are excited to announce that Afari has released the beta version of our web app for public use. There’s still more work to be done on the app, but you can start sharing your thoughts, photos and memes right now at app.afari.io.

Afari is a decentralized social media platform that aims to give you more control over your data and privacy and reward you for creating quality content that others enjoy.

In an earlier post, we discussed the motivation for Afari and how it seeks to solve the problems of data privacy, platform censorship and allowing content creators to more easily monetize their content. This beta launch is the first milestone on our journey to create social media that puts you, the user, in control.

Afari compared to other decentralized platforms

Afari is not the first decentralized social media platform, but it offers some significant advantages compared to other blockchain based decentralized alternatives:

  • Afari is free to use. There’s no transaction fees to post, like, comment, or do anything else on the platform. This is a result of using a blockchain for identity and storing routes to user storage. For a more technical overview, see this research paper and the Blockstack whitepaper.
  • Afari understands the right to be forgotten: Unlike other platforms that make posts permanent once their posted, Afari allows you to edit posts after posting them and to delete posts, so you always have the right to be forgotten.

How you can help

We’d love for you to share your ideas on Afari today! We welcome any and all feedback or suggestions about the web app — don’t hesitate to use our feedback form or email us at hello@afari.io.
