APHN is a student/faculty-run association established in 1991 at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health. Our mission is to create a platform for education, collaborations, and building a community to strengthen public health knowledge and practice in Africa.

We are privileged to continue having Bill Brieger, Professor in Health Systems Program (Department of International Health at Johns Hopkins University) as our support.

Meet the E-Board 2021/2022

Hello all,

Welcome to the 1st newsletter for the academic year 2021/2022.

It has been a busy couple of months so far but we are pleased to announce the new E-board for the academic year 2021/2022.

President — Ifeoma Nwigwe

Ifeoma is an MPH student following the epidemiology/biostatistics concentration track.

She is interested in cancer epidemiology in sub-Saharan Africa and epigenetic markers that are unique to noncommunicable diseases found in people of African descent.

Her formal undergraduate and graduate training have been in biochemistry and epigenetics. She received her BA in Biochemistry from Rutgers University and received her Ph.D. in Molecular Biophysics and Biochemistry from Yale University.

Her doctoral experience developed her interest in epigenetic markers of NCDs specific to people of African ancestry. She moved to Nigeria soon after completing her Ph.D. to identify needs specific to establishing cancer epigenetic studies in Nigeria, and more broadly subSaharan Africa. The experience was a motivating factor in her pursuing an MPH degree.

Long term, she plans to broaden her epidemiology interests to include population genetics and epigenetics of other NCDs amongst people of African ancestry.

VP Operations — Chigolum Pamela Oyeka

Chigolum is an MPH student following the Epidemiology and Biostatistics concentration track and taking a certificate in healthcare finance and management.

She attained her MB;BS degree in 2017 at the University of Nigeria Enugu Campus and has since worked in both the clinical and public health spheres.

She is interested in clinical research and increasing equitable access to healthcare. Her interests are driven by the unequal access to quality health care in developing countries which she experienced firsthand during her housemanship training at National Hospital Abuja, as well as her experience working as a Monitoring and Evaluation Officer with the National Emergency Routine Immunization Coordination Center at the National Primary Health Care Development Agency in Nigeria.

She is an avid entrepreneur and natural hair enthusiast who enjoys reading novels, cooking, and various other crafts in her spare time.

VP of Events — Hussam Schwaib

Hussam is an aspiring Sudanese surgeon specializing in artificial intelligence, surgical mechatronics, patient safety, healthcare quality, and public health.

His degree is interdisciplinary between Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, and the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality.

His current position is as a Postdoctoral Research Trainee, Division of Pediatric Surgery, All Children’s Hospital Johns Hopkins Medicine.

He enjoys reading historical fiction and fantasy fiction, day and summit hiking, artistic drawing, woodworking, and robotics.

VP of Events — Elise Tirza Ohene-Kyei

Elise is a full-time MPH at the Bloomberg School of Public Health.

She is also a physician and writer from Ghana. She has always been interested in Adolescent Health and is currently pursuing this passion.

When she’s not busy with schoolwork, she writes fiction on the blog https://lettersfromthisheart.com, and has recently published her first book!

Secretary — James Ebot

James is an SPH, MPH candidate.

He is a neurosurgeon by training with an interest in health care management, health disparities and public health.

He is an avid runner in his spare and a family guy.

Treasurer — Yvette Yeboah-Kordieh

Yvette is a full-time MPH student in the Epidemiology/Biostatistics concentration.
She is a physician by profession. She was trained in the University of Ghana School of Medicine and Dentistry and graduated in 2018.
Before joining the MPH class, she worked as a general practitioner in the Pediatrics Department of Ghana Police Hospital.
She is aspiring to combine clinical work with research into chronic disease epidemiology and preventive medical practices.
She loves trying new cuisines and exploring new places.

Academic Outreach Coordinator — Danielle Lonbong Njiometio

Danielle is in the Global Disease Epidemiology and Control- International Health Department at Johns Hopkins.

She is really interested in promoting women’s leadership and helping LMIC develop a better preparedness and response plan to emergencies.

Her hobbies include fitness, baking, and learning new languages.

Faculty Outreach Coordinator — Mame Fall

Mame is a full-time MPH student with a concentration in Health System and Policy.

She loves to travel, enjoy nature, and have a good laugh. Her favorite sport is boxing and swimming. A favorite place she has visited is Cairo, Egypt.

Alumni Liasion — Mona Hussain

Mona is a graduate student in my final year of a MAS in Global Health Planning and Management.
Her areas of interest lie within maternal neonatal child health, knowledge management & dissemination, and health systems strengthening.
She has worked as a health care provider for 20 years in LMICs and the United States.
She is originally from Pakistan and has volunteered in global health programs and implemented a Primary Health Care Project focused on MNCH in the city of Karachi.
She is also a yoga instructor and teaches yoga at a local studio in her spare time. She has two dogs; and loves

Events Coordinator — Rediet Tekalign

Rediet is a current full-time MPH student at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. She is in the Epidemiology and Biostatistics concentration.

Before attending Hopkins, Rediet received her MD from St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She worked as a general practitioner in the infectious disease unit of St. Paul’s Hospital, focusing on pediatric patients affected with HIV/AIDS.

Her research interest includes pharmacoepidemiology, clinical trials, biologic drug safety, and effectiveness in pediatrics.

Her hobbies are mainly outdoor activities like hiking, reading, and nature photography.

Events Coordinator — Prossy Namusisi

Prossy is a full-time MPH student in the Epidemiology/Biostatistics concentration.

She is a Ugandan by nationality, and a medical doctor by training working currently with Kawempe National Referral Hospital Uganda. My career goals are in maternal and child health.

Besides her career, she is a social person, enjoys traveling, singing, smiling, and making new friends.

Webmaster — Chineze Adania Nwankwo

Chineze is an MPH student following the epidemiology/biostatistics concentration track and pursuing certificates in Clinical Trials and Health Disparities and Inequalities.

She studied Medicine at the University of Lagos, Nigeria, and attained an MBBS degree.

Her interest in public health has grown out of experiences as a medical provider and as a volunteer in various youth and health groups. Her interactions and conversations with patients revealed that their ailments were as much caused by disease as well as a lack of access to affordable, basic healthcare and other socioeconomic factors.

She would like to use her M.P.H. to better inform future patient care and hopefully develop policies and education that will benefit marginalized communities.

She also enjoys listening to various genres of music and is an amateur pianist.

Member-at-Large — Solomon Afolabi

Solomon is an MPH student following the epidemiology concentration.

He is from southwest Nigeria and holds an MBBS degree.

In addition to my clinical life, his interests also extend into preventive medicine, Health policy, Epidemiology, Health Informatics, and International health.

His dream is to contribute greatly to creating a healthier world for everyone to live in
