Supporting My Wife on Her Stroke Recovery Journey
Marriage vows take on new meaning when sickness visits.
When you say the vows in sickness and health, you must be ready for what comes with that promise.
It's a commitment to stand before another person and tie yourself legally and spiritually to one of humanity's oldest institutions: marriage.
I didn't marry until I was almost 30 years old. We were married in a preacher's living room with his large brood of children watching.
We stood there and expressed our love for one another. We were young and anxious to see where our married journey would lead us.
We didn't know that our union would experience unexpected and challenging circumstances.
Our lives took a turn into challenging circumstances 20 years into our marriage. I noticed she had been walking with a limp for a few days, but we thought it was related to work. She was a paraprofessional in the local school district and walked for a portion of her day. But the limp didn't go away.
In May 2021, I took her to the emergency room. We knew something was wrong, but not exactly what. The doctors performed all the required tests. We waited anxiously for the results.
