Young Fatherhood

A boy wearing man clothes
two kids barely out of his teens
he wants to be the father his
dad never could be
he wants to free his child from
the shackles of poverty
but doesn’t possess the tools
to prevent his child from becoming a fool on the streets

Faith rests in the heart
he can create a better start
return to the education
he neglected and
prevent damnation
to the institution of incarceration
which consumed many of the black male generation
including his own sperm donor or creator

he is a young father
dreams fill the mind
he isn’t blind
to the fact the road is hard
but the journey is worth the goal
to protect his child from a brutal existence
in a world that doesn't care
and never fair
