A Lesson from Tabitha Brown’s DEI Message
Support the Brand, Not the Supplier
The internet’s favorite big sister, auntie, and mother came through with a very calm and insightful message about Target, Walmart, Amazon, and other companies eliminating DEI practices and policies.
I thought these new policies only applied to the company’s corporate employment, but as I was listening to Tabitha speak, I learned that this consequently, and probably primarily, affects Black-owned businesses that have benefited from their products being on the shelves of these major retailers.
Black-Owned Businesses In Major Retailers
Tabitha reminded us that it took a lot for Black-owned businesses to get on the radar of and solidify a deal with major retailers like Target.
Tabitha stated that she has various products exclusively in Target, Walmart, and Amazon. She educated us on business and noted that it is not as easy as people think for a brand/business to just pull their products off the shelves of these major retailers. She reminded us that those stores represent “mass production” and small, self-funded businesses, like Donna’s Recipe, do not have the capacity to store and sell that massive quantity of products.
