A new approach to “Black Excellence” must begin with a new frame of reference. In Black culture, individual success and status are recognized, to a great extent, as Black Excellence in a white supremacist society. What is Black Excellence? And how does it function economically?

Black Excellence is often associated with the possession of degrees, career jobs, designer clothes, jewelry, luxury cars, etc. Its economic function empowers and enriches the white owners of these manufactured goods, services, and jobs to maintain a racist society.

When we see our people posing in pictures with Gucci bags standing next to a G-Wagon or their dream job is to work for a white corporation, we have to ask ourselves who benefits from our excellence?

Out of ignorance, our excellence is funding the lives of our oppressors which overshadows the true nature of white supremacy, world domination. We cannot associate “Black Excellence” with individual success and status when our communities are associated with failure and poverty. Our excellence must be associated with community success (institution building) and status (our position in the world).

Ask yourself, is my success in service to support white supremacy, or is my success in service to achieve Black liberation?

“You cannot consume yourself into equality, you must PRODUCE yourself into equality.” — Dr. Amos Wilson
