CBS Sunday Morning Helped The Crown Movement

On Sunday, March 23, CBS Sunday Morning featured a story on the dangers of chemicals in relaxers mostly used by Black women. The very thoughtful, well-done segment featured stylists and their clients, who augmented the reporter’s research to inform the audience of the harmful effects hair chemicals have on Black women’s health.

The segment used this information to reveal why Black women choose to wear their hair naturally with no products. Two women revealed their twist-outs and braids. Others revealed their lace front wig and sew-in to show another option.

I wish they had only shown the natural hair.

The segment served two purposes.

First, it enlightened the Black audience of the potential harmful effects hair relaxers can have on its users. It actually prompted a conversation in my living room about hair products in general and how to avoid harmful chemicals in all beauty products. For those who do not keep their ear to social media and other platforms, CBS Sunday Morning reached an older and possibly more intellectual audience with this pertinent information.

Second, it enlightened the non-Black audience of the potential harmful effects hair relaxers can have…
