We have to talk about liberating minds as well as liberating society.
~ Angela Davis, Feminist political activist, philosopher, academic, and author

Five years ago, my nephew posted a picture on Instagram of his little boy. The caption: “Eyes as beautiful as the sky.”

Several deep breaths later, I commented —

Even if they were big & brown, they would still be beautiful.

Of course, there were zero responses. No remarks, no likes, no brown muscle emojis or red hearts. He might have even deleted my comment. I don’t remember what happened because shortly thereafter, I stopped following his account.

The thing is, to understand why his IG caption got me so upset, I need to go back three decades to 1993.

First Born

We are three: I’m the middle (only daughter), the youngest, Ivan, and the eldest, Elvis (yes, mama was a fan of the singer!). Back then — and still to today — my older brother was the only one to have had children. Kevin is his firstborn and immediately became the apple of our family’s eyes.
