A History Lesson on Mental Empowerment

Our ancestors did not have the opportunity to choose whether or not to be held captive physically. It took about 200 years and several generations of slaves before a select few used their mental power to realize they did not have to be held captive and subsequently devised strategies to secure their freedom and that of others. They had the audacity to use their mind to envision a life of freedom and pursued intentional action to claim that which their mind conceived.

Another 100 years later, Blacks, while no longer slaves, still had to fight for equality and the freedoms white people freely enjoyed. During this time, Blacks were called n*gger. Fast forward about 10 years, and we began calling each other n*gga, which took white people’s power out of the word. Once again, we used our minds to decide to no longer be a slave to the oppressor and took intentional action.

Mental Enslavement Today

When any of us feels disempowered by the absence of affirmative action laws or DEI programs, we are choosing to be a slave to a system, and at times words.

Just like your employer’s leadership team is not going to apply for your promotion…
