Married to “The Game:” Exploring Lasting Moral Panic and Drew Sidora
Melanie and Derwin Davis are not real people
It’s been nearly 20 years since the super-related sitcom The Game hiked its way onto our TV screens.
As one of the only Black sitcoms I’ve ever witnessed literally get resurrected from the dead, there’s no denying that they had a magical formula with a cast that had fantastic chemistry, captivating audiences of all kinds.
Indeed, it was the best of times. It was the worst of times. We watched in awe when Derwin and Melanie finally got hitched. And we also collectively gasped for air when Melanie went to make up with Derwin, only to find out his rebound, Janay, was pregnant — yes, this is a reference to Chris Brown and Jordin Sparks’ “No Air” being played during that sappy scene.
But at some point, we have to remove ourselves from the fantasy world and allow these characters to move on in real life. This is why we’re here; the Drew Sidora hate train is getting weird at this point.
Joking or not, I’ve literally seen people justifying everything from not supporting her music career to wanting her kicked off of Housewives, simply because she did too good of a job playing “the other woman” between Melanie and Derwin all those years ago.
