Thoughts on This Cease Fire

Finally a Ceasefire

I see a lot of joy in the streets and, at the same time, focus.

You see, I have this saying:

“You got your eye on the sparrow? I got my eye on the hawk.”

It seems like the streets of Washington, D.C., and the rest of Maryland and Virginia have their eye on that same hawk I’ve been catching within eyeshot, wondering when it will strike.

All of this conflict — this genocide by Israel’s hand and American technology — has taken a massive toll on me. On top of other problems I had to solve, my measure of empathy genuinely had me feeling the pain and agony of every scream of a child and every cry of a mother.

I won’t say everything we did in my time in Afghanistan was right. While I never participated in or facilitated any bullshit, I’m fully aware I’m speaking from the collective identity of “Army veteran,” which makes it all hit differently. Everything we did out there wasn’t right, but such facts do not preclude one from identifying that what Israel has been doing to Gaza ain’t a fucking war. It’s genocide. And it’s wrong. A ceasefire should have happened a long time ago.

Genocide Joe
