Let’s Have a Conversation about Older (Black) Men and Their Views of Women

I don’t mean to broad stroke a demographic, but I am seeing a pattern that I want to address.

Men born before 1980 seem to have issues with certain women.

“Do men find you difficult?”

My 80-something-year-old aunt (randomly) asked me if men find me difficult because of my intellect and credentials. I told her I don’t have that problem. But then, I thought about it.

I don’t have that problem because I stopped associating with men over 50 in that way. I am an older Millennial and teeter on the line with Gen X’ers. I could date a man in his early 50s and be within a decade of my age, but I won’t.

Men 50 and above tend to find women like me difficult because the women they grew up with — their mothers, sisters, classmates, and first wives — were not as assertive, direct, accomplished, educated, or strong-willed as Millennial women. So, they don’t know how to deal with that.

They either find me difficult or want to become my dependent. Either way, they feel they don’t measure up.

Even outside of dating, I find men above 50 to be disrespectful of my standards for what I will accept…
