WWDC 2018: Highlights of What Apple Announced in its Keynote

Some people see innovation as change, but Apple, the pioneer of technology thinks it is making things better. This year they are bringing a hell lot of innovations and updates to their range of devices to make things better.

Here is what WWDC’18 is all about:

On June 4th, 2018, Apple conducted its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC’18) at the San Jones Convection Centre with an audience of 6000 in-house. The Keynote was wrapped up with announcements on 4 different platforms. iOS, watchOS, tvOS, macOS.

KEY ANNOUNCEMENTS:

1. iOS 12:

iOS embodies the philosophy of putting the customers at the center of everything that the Apple designs. The next big release of iOS is iOS 12 focussed on delivering high performance. It will be available in all the same devices as iOS11.

AUGMENTED REALITY:

iOS 12 makes an easy way to experience AR across the system. Apple along with Pixar created a new file format called USDZ,which will allow developers to put 3D content into an app. The key technology behind the Augmented Reality is ARKit.ARKit 2 has been developed to deliver advancement with improved face tracking and multiuser augmented reality. To take advantage of the precision that the iOS devices provide Apple has introduced a new app called Measure.

LIMIT THE NOTIFICATIONS!Enabling Do Not disturb and limiting notifications is made possible. Controlling notifications is just made easy. Notifications can also be grouped in iOS 12. Yet another feature called “SCREEN TIME”is introduced. Get a weekly detailed activity report and track down your activities. And little further, Apple has also enabled a feature called Activity limits.Set limits so that you never get addicted to your phone.

Animoji is getting updated with tongue detection, new characters, and the ability to create a custom Animoji that looks like you, called Memoji.This year Apple has taken a great leap forward and introduced “Group Facetime”.You will be able to facetime with up to 32 people simultaneously.

Some Minor Updates on iOS12:

News now includes a search tab, a sidebar in News iPad. Stocks and Voice memo has been completely rebuilt and brought to the iPads for the first time. iBooks have been rebranded as Apple Books with a design change. Car Play now supports third-party Navigation System apps bringing in lot more options to deal with.

2. watchOS 5:

The heart of Apple Watch is watchOS. The next version is watchOS 5. Here are the advancements in it:

CHALLENGE A FRIEND!In watchOS 5, a user can challenge their activities with any friends for a seven-day competition whenever they would like.

Introducing NEW WORKOUT TYPESlike Yoga and Hiking, along with updates for running workout which will include rolling mile pace, setting up custom pace alert and Cadence measurement. Apple has also added Alerting options before a workout.

Staying connected with people is what people love about Apple Watch. watchOS 5 has taken this feature to next level by introducing “Walkie Talkie”- The real-time voice but in the spontaneity of short messaging. In watchOS 5 Apple has integrated Webkit, so now web pages can be viewed in Apple watch itself. You also have more to listen to with the introduction of Podcasts to Watches. No need to carry your ID cards hereafter,simply feed it into the Wallet, and use it anywhere on and off campus and even get access to places.

SIRI:

SIRI gets better with “SIRI Shortcuts”in iOS 12 and watchOS 5. With shortcuts, any app can expose quick actions to Siri. Siri will also suggest actions hereafter. New contents to the Siri Watch Phase like live sports scores, maps and heart rate. Also for the first time, the users can use third-party apps in Siri Watch Phase. The main feature in watchOS 5 is “NO MORE — HEY SIRI!”You just have to raise your wrist and talk to Siri.

3. tvOS:

Apple tv 4k is bringing the latest in Audio technology — DOLBY ATMOS.With ATMOS we can get room-filling sounds and enable sound in 3D configuration. Apple provides free upgrades to Dolby Atmos and a huge range of live sports and live news. Apple is partnering with cable providers around the world to use Apple tv boxes to replace cable boxes. This year they are replacing Single Sign-on with Zero Sign-on. It is even possible to view beautiful Aerials via Apple Tv including the Earth’s aerial view.

4. macOS Mojave:

MacOS is the heart of what makes a Mac, a Mac. Apple brings striking changes to macOS this year. Next iteration of computer OS is named as macOS Mojave, named after a desert in California. Influenced by how beautiful the desert looks in the nightlight, Apple has enabled the brand new DARK MODEin macOS Mojave, changing every piece of interface that usually appears in white into shades of grey and black. Apple also introduces “Dynamic Desktop”which subtly changes throughout the day.

Apple puts an end to clumsy desktops by introducing DESKTOP STACKSusing which files can be organized automatically. Findergets a new addition called gallery view. It’s even possible to check out the metadata of a file from the finder window itself. macOS will offer suggestions on what to do with selected files (like print, make a PDF, etc). An interesting fact is that all these actions are customizable.

Quick Lookhas been made more powerful in Mojave. You can mark-up PDFs or add a signature to it and can edit pictures and trim videos without actually opening it. A new function of Screenshotallows users not just to screenshot images but also videos. Making GIFs just got easier. Using Apple’s continuity technology, taking a picture and automatically bringing it on to a document or any software in a Mac is made possible.

Some popular iOS apps provide the Mac’s with Mojave — Stockswith integrated high-quality business news, Voice memosand finally a Homeis coming to the mac.

SECURITY AND PRIVACY:

New privacy software that allows users to block tracking cookies. Through Mojave, it is made difficult for the companies that track computers based on unique identifiers. All these privacy policies are brought into both Mojave and iOS12.

To summarize, Apple has brought so many new updates to all of its platform which is amazing and will be available to the user from the upcoming fall. And the Developers Beta is already available for the usage.
