A Moment to Savor

Forever

We worked so hard that season,
bound with the soil,
beads and buckets of sweat weeping
in the sweeping, blistering heat

We prayed, but the blessed rains never arrived,
destroying the crop and my blighted spirit,
leaving nothing to show for the tension and the toil
and all the hopes I kept hidden in a mason jar

And the humble house became dark and grey
The windows caked with droppings
The missing shingles that would have to wait
to be replaced and the eaves to be scraped
for there were far too many mouths to feed
and it was so very cold

We would try again
but it proved too hard
to face more disappointment

For what is the meaning of life?
Is it just to endure trials and strife?

I need something to enjoy, for more than just a moment
An embrace, a smile, a sign

I need to savor a bite
Before I lose my sanity in despair
It’s just not fair’, you’ll hear me cry

And just for once, I wish to savor life.
