More than a hashtag

The quest for identity,
respect that measures up
like a red feather;
a wildfire quickly spreading.

The quest for ebony equality,
a journey before my days, but
like a terminal disease;
still breaking hearts.

Today we battle home,
biting the hand that fed,
chasing neon lights;
breaking humanity further.

The colonial ills persist,
evident in poverty and misery
masked in gifts and handouts;
that we remain beggars still.

Our journey, a story of pain,
sacrifice and inhumanity
reduced to a hashtag; like
a new track, trending.

Look beyond the neon instead,
see past the hashtag to realities
and behold humanity’s loss;
as she subdues her kind.
