Earlier this week. a writing challenge was raised by the editor of a favorite publication, A Few Words.

I accepted the task at hand with some trepidation. I would not be able to achieve my goal, if I came down with a sudden bout of verbal constipation or writer’s block.

A flow chart ensued.

Day 1 Strife — 2 Sweet Love — 3 Sour Grapes — -4 Pain+Sports Entertainment — 5 Technology — 6 Writing —7 Mystery Surprise

Strife: Day 1

The first thing on my mind was my current real life strife: four days of dealing with the huge headache of a leak in my apartment. Pipes behind walls and sheetrock were involved and it was a big mess.

Another renovation disaster. Plus, my back was acting up and had me slightly incapacitated, so I was totally fed up.

The topic was right in front of my nose. Strife and struggles. I had hoped that writing an allegory would be cathartic. Instead, I felt drained. After that one piece, I chose to leave that realm. I entered the state of grace and love.

Sweet vs. Sour Love: Days 2 & 3

I explored my options of different categories of Love. That’s when I hit on First Love.

Next, Unrequited Love which is like a combo lunch special, something sweet and sour. Love mixed with Intense Emotional Pain. That of course, led to:

Physical Pain & Sports Entertainment: Day 4

Sports injuries of football players being tackled. The kind of pain a boxer must feel in the ring.

Technology: Day 5

Sports Gladiators led me to think about Technology. How advancements affect new approaches to old habits: like reading, watching movies and shopping. They all seemed to intersect in one familiar place, namely Amazon Prime.

All thoughts lead to Writing: Day 6

By now, Writing was becoming a habit. I started to load up on caffeine and even changed my coffee drinking mug. And I began a daily regimen of stretching exercises.

After all, it is the new year, but more than that I needed a distraction. I took up Intermittent Walking. Just to stimulate and jog my brain for topics and that mind-body-soul connection. Why not write a piece on sources of inspiration, like a 7-day writing challenge, as well as writing blocks.

I started to read daily excerpts of books and memoirs and quotations.

Maybe life is one big playoff, like a character or scenario from the Hunger Games. “May the odds be ever in your favor.”

Everyone loves a good Mystery: Day 7

Since I’m not sure what my final story will be for day 7 just yet, I’ll just leave that as a Mystery. I might just surprise myself.
