Cat: Where are you going?
Alice: Which way should I go?
Cat: That depends on where you are going.
Alice: I don’t know.
Cat: Then it doesn’t matter which way you go.

A purposeless life

Most of us are driving through our journey of life without much focus on where we are going. Like a leaf blowing away in the wind, without any purposeful and defined direction, flying from one place to the other, as the wind takes us. Without any control; we let life live us rather than us living life!

Regret for the things we did can be tempered by time; it is regret for the things we did not do that is inconsolable. Sydney J. Harris

The reality is that we get caught up in the daily grind of home, work, family and even friends. Life is going on, the clock is ticking, and there is always something to attend to. Most of our time then gets dictated by others around us, and so not to hurt anyone, we never learn to say No; thus never getting enough time left over for us and the things that we would like to do. And one day, when we look back, time has flown and moments to remember are hardly any.

Even free time today is not really free. Today, the idiot box has been replaced by the even-more-idiotic multiple option mindless entertainment of Social media. Who went where and did what with who is all we are all occupied with. Leading not to anything positive; rather a more stressful life.

We all are so “busy” that we have no time to even define our purpose and direction in life.

A purposeless life is a life hardly lived. Age catches up sooner rather than later, with regrets then coming to the fore. Oh how I wish I would have done this, or how I wish I would have done that.

So where do we go from here?

Live a life with purpose. Plan your days so that you are living the life that you want to live. Say No when you have to. Do the things that you love doing and be ruthless in cutting out anything that does not give you pleasure. Don’t worry about criticism or negative comments from people around you. It’s your life, live it with a definite aim and goal.

One day your whole life will flash in front of your eyes. Make sure the story is worth watching.

Be unapologetic about your plans, your purpose. You have no one to answer to other than yourself. In the end, you will only regret the chances you did not take, the things you wanted to but did not do. Let no one silence your thunder.

“Keep your eyes on the road, your hands upon the wheel” wise words said by Jim Morrison of Roadhouse Blues. I may add “Define the destination, plan your road first. And then go.”
