Don’t Do Valentine’s Day

How do you celebrate Valentine’s with someone you’ve been with for forever?

How do you make this year more memorable than the last one?
What gift can you give this time to one-up the one you gave last year?
What if you can’t afford something fancy this year?

Hmmm…how about…

You cook her favorite breakfast.
You walk the fur baby so she can sleep in a few hours more.
You wake her up for work if her alarm doesn’t. And open the curtains to let the sunshine in and greet her beautiful face.

You remind her to drink water and bring her a glass if she doesn’t.
You bring her a pillow to prop up her back when she’s too focused on work and unaware of her bad sitting posture.
You ask her to take a few minutes’ break. And if she doesn’t, you give her the occasional kiss.

Sometimes, you find yourself staring at her, thinking of all the things you want so badly to give her in this lifetime.

As the day ends, you give her a shoulder and back massage and run her a warm bath to refresh and relax.
Then you listen to her rant about her day, even when you don’t understand everything.

Be there for her as a supportive ear or a resounding board. Just be there.

You help with the laundry and the dishes.
You keep her calm when the puppy is sick.

You take care of the things that she’s too tired to do, even at times when you’re too tired yourself.

So how do you do Valentine’s Day?

You don’t.
You do Every Day.
Because, after all, love is not just about that one day in a year.
It’s about every day that you show up and choose to take care of the person you love.

Dedicated to M, my every day Valentine.
