Every Day Is A Love Letter

You only wrote me one letter, as a way to say goodbye if you never made it back.

You once wrote me a love letter, dropped into the mail on the day you left for a monthlong trip to China.

It was a long letter. Your pinched handwriting filled pages of yellow ledger paper. There was not a single error. No scratched-out words.

I could tell you had stayed up all night writing it.

I still have it, envelope and all. Of course I do. I keep it in the folder with all of my important documents: my birth certificate, my social security card, and our marriage license.

It was the only paper letter you wrote to me. But it was the only one that needed to be written, to tell me you needed me for the rest of your life.

I know you wrote it in case something happened to you on your China trip, so I would have a goodbye from you that I could take out and hold in my hands forever.

I thought of you on all those days when you were far from an internet connection in the rural interior of China. You were backpacking through farming country and industrial cities without tourist pretensions.

I looked up the weather forecasts of places I had never heard of, learning the people there were enduring…
