Respond-No Matter What
There are a million memes, scads of quotes & myriad expressions all claiming that no answer is somehow appropriate or acceptable. Or that’s it’s an answer in itself. No.It’s. Not. We are much more complicated & discerning than that, & our imaginings about what the lack of response might mean are often overwhelming & debilitating. It’s cruel, rude, wrong & cowardly not to bother responding when someone has taken the time to reach out to you.
Professionally, just format an auto-reply if you’re not interested, to provide a means for all to move on. Personally, more often than not, it’s someone who’s metaphorically cut open a vein & asked for an opinion or help, which is never easy to do. Not answering is never ok, just lazy & lacking empathy. Especially in these turbulent times, make yourself a promise to find a way to answer when someone gets in touch. You might be truly surprised by the exchange. And one day, you’ll be appreciative of those who bother to respond when you find yourself reaching out in need & waiting for an answer.
