Now I Love My Name

Having an unusual name can be difficult for a young child

As a child, I disliked my name. It was unusual and where we lived at the time (Nigeria) it was often mispronounced as ‘mala’ instead of ‘mar-la’. I never offered corrections, just frowned inwardly and wished for the umpteenth time my name was easy to pronounce, like Jane or Mary.
