And we never knew

She promised to give him a beautiful future.
She kissed him and let him cry on her shoulder.
He was hurt before,
It was hard for him to believe someone again, he told her.
She did everything she could to make him feel home,
And he tried to take it all in.
There were fights, tears, anger,
Also kisses, hugs, and long walks.
They thought they were going somewhere,
Somewhere, where they always wanted to be.
Days, months, and years passed by.
One day, she woke up and looked around.
There was her, there was him,
And a vast space in between.
Her eyes were filled with tears, his cheeks got wet.
They were holding different books,
So, their pages never met.
