Did you know that pink pineapples are a thing?

The pineapple variety has a normal green and orange skin like all other pineapples. The difference with this particular kind is that their flesh, the one that is eaten is pink in colour.

There is no cause for alarm though as the pink colour is simply because the pineapple has been engineered to produce lower levels of the enzymes that are already in conventional pineapples. These enzymes are the ones that convert the pink pigment lycopene to the yellow pigment beta carotene in regular pineapples.

With lower levels of lycopene in the fruit, the flesh turns pink as opposed to yellow. Lycopene is the pigment that makes tomatoes red and watermelons pink, so it is commonly and safely consumed," according to delish.com

The pink pineapple has been said to be sweeter and less savoury than regular pineapples.

Developed by Delmonte after 15 years of attempting to perfect it, you can now find the pink glow in selected stores and from their online store.

It is going to take years before the pink pineapples are available everywhere that fruits are sold as for now, they are being sold without their crowns to allow Delmonte to propagate others from these crowns.
