There is a song, written back in 1952 and performed ten years later by a group called the Duprees, in addition to so many other performing artists. It was romantic and perfect for slow-dancing and by today’s standards a classic, even referenced in movie scores.

Like many songs during that era, songwriters looked to the seven wonders of the ancient world to inspire them in their writing. The lyrics go like this:

“See the pyramids along the Nile
Watch the sunrise on a tropic isle
Just remember, darling, all the while
You belong to me…”

All the songwriters, recording artists, record companies and promoters involved deserve the credit for the success the listening public bestowed on the song. But for many of us, the first line is what grabbed our attention and remains indelibly etched in our collective memory.

Now, the question remains: Which are the other wonders of the ancient world? Here they are, as listed in History.com.

  1. Great Pyramid of Giza, Egypt: The Great Pyramid, located at Giza on the west bank of the Nile River north of Cairo in Egypt, is the only wonder of the ancient world that has survived to the present day.
  2. Hanging Gardens of Babylon
  3. Statue of Zeus at Olympia
  4. Temple of Artemis at Ephesus
  5. Mausoleum at Halicarnassus
  6. Colossus of Rhodes
  7. Lighthouse of Alexandria

Interestingly enough, History.com lists the “New” Wonders

The Taj Mahal, one of the most beautiful and stunning pieces of architecture, significance and history in the world, is one of the seven wonders of the Modern world. Here’s the list of the rest:

Now, just guess what is considered the 8th Wonder of the Present Modern World?

If you guessed the Internet, you would be right. How else would we be able to quickly learn and virtually travel for glimpses of knowledge across time and space for an immediate connection. Can you think of anything that brings us closer?

Still, I can’t get that tune out of my head. Perhaps you’ve never heard it. Why not Google it to view a YouTube video?

Isn’t that an amazing Wonder?
