Start Small, But Start Today
Big goals look scary, but you don’t have to reach them at once
As long as I remember myself I believed that success happens overnight. Maybe because when I was younger exciting things seemed to pop out of nowhere. You are going to high school and one day BAM! everyone has iPhones. That’s how I heard about Apple and Steve Jobs for the first time. Since then I’ve started noticing interesting people just appearing in the spotlight in all their glory.
Don’t get me wrong — overnight success does exist, it’s the moment of breakthrough when you literally wake up famous and wealthy. The thing that we don’t see is how much effort, energy and time was put to being ready for an opportunity to show up. Behind 1 viral video there are hours of video with no views, behind 1 article making front page there are hundreds of posts that no one read, behind 1 unicorn startup there are tons of ideas and prototypes that were rejected. We just don’t get to see it.
Success is the sum of small efforts — repeated day in and day out. Robert Collier
No matter what you are trying to achieve — you can do it by starting small and that will do you more good than waiting for the right moment or when you are ready. That moment will probably never come, but when you reach your big goal you will be grateful that didn’t wait longer.
Do one small thing today that will bring you closer to your goal
If you want to run a marathon, put on your running shoes and run around the block. If you want to write a book, start with the first page. If you want to change your odious job, update your CV. Whatever it is don’t postpone it till tomorrow or Monday or New Year or when pigs fly.
The key to achieving what you want is consistency and patience. Sounds boring, right? But that what works. When you start moving towards your goals, even with the smallest steps, you will see the situation changing, opportunities appearing, and most importantly you will see the progress that will motivate you to keep going. And before you know it — you will be right where you wanted to.
