There will be a lot to learn about 2020

Perhaps not?

There is a joke going around the Internet. The only ones who will have it worse than us living through the pandemic will be the kids learning about it in history classes. They will have a lot to learn about 2020, they say. As in every joke, people some truth in this statement.

But they’re wrong.

Learning about previous pandemics was the easiest thing. Here’s an example:

During the (insert number) years of the (insert number) century, the world faced (name of the disease). The disease proved to be devastating because the (majority of) people did not know about (the reason for spread, effective means of stopping)and instead chose to believe in (supernatural explanation). The disease slowed its spread and eventually died out due to reasons not fully understood, although multiple explanations exist. Unfortunately, before stopping, it ended around (insert number) millions of lives.

Perhaps, we could add a paragraph like this one.

Today, the same disease would end approximately (insert number) thousands of lives because we know better. For another disease to have such a devastating effect in this century, it would have to be (a quality not yet detected in human pathogens) and cause a symptom which is devious enough to be either hard to detect and distinguish from other symptoms or hard to be perceived as a threat before it’s too late. Scientists estimate the following habits (insert name of habits) could lead a pathogen to develop such capabilities and are looking for effective ways to end such practices with worldwide support and interest.

This way, it’s still easy to learn, and it’s much more useful. Addition of such a paragraph would, unfortunately, require of us to change our ways.
