What I wish I had known back when, back then
Things People Say And Do
Observations from a life working in therapy
People often get exasperated by the inexplicable behaviour of friends and family members who seem ‘stuck’ and unable to go forward with their lives. Yet the truth is, we often have to go backwards in order to be able to go forward. Sometimes, a visit to the paradise garden before the fall is absolutely vital. There, we can do the reparative work needed on those parts of us that got left behind in this and other lifetimes. In working with a young man at the moment, it is evident his heartbreak, both deep and ancient, has caused an inner collapse that must be seen and addressed before he can resume his journey in this life. So often what ails us lingers in the deep soul, unseen, forgotten, yet wreaking a terrible and baffling fate. Everything has its reason; each one its season.
People say forget the past but the truth is ‘you’ can’t. For it is one of the great movements of the soul for the past to continually wash up on the shores of the psyche. Story and soul are intimately intertwined around the spinal descent of life, the dance of the divine into matter. What can happen, however is that the Self can be realised, though not by anyone, with time and universe utterly transcended. In fact, reality is always already the case, but ‘we’ obscure the view.
