This Is How Joy Arrives
A blue-jay landed on my chair
yesterday, so close I could have
touched it but daring not frighten
him away, I held my breath instead.
Barely breathing, it occurs to me
that this is how joy arrives, wearing
a coat of surprise and delight, seldom
expected, but stealing our breath away.
In the blink of an eye, gone and
no amount of wishing or planning
or scheduling will bring it back, and
we watch, eyes wide with possibility.
