Everybody thinks negative thoughts from time to time. Maybe these thoughts are about your circumstances in life. Or perhaps, something triggered a change in your mood.

While everyone experiences this, the important thing to understand is that the judgment you often place on yourself is usually overblown.

It doesn’t matter if you’re just having a bad day or if you have a pattern of negative thinking. The following trick will help you gain a new perspective and provide a space to reflect and see life more realistically.

Question: What’s the first thing you do when you become upset?

If you’re like most people, your mind instantly focuses on everything that’s wrong.

What starts out as something small quickly spirals into a huge problem. This is because the more time you spend thinking of negativity the bigger it grows.

Try this: Next time you’re upset or dwelling on problems in your life ask yourself, what’s right?

The trick is, instead of focusing on what’s wrong you shift to all the things that are right in your life. This is not ignoring that some problems exist. You simply acknowledge the problems, but you also acknowledge there are some things that are right too.

Life isn’t 100% bad. When you start thinking about what’s right you start to add some balance in your life. If you’ve never given yourself the time to think about what’s right in your life you may need give it some deep thought.

But once you notice that there ARE some things that are right in your life you can then better cope with negative thinking. But like every skill it takes a little practice to get good at it.

The next time you’re upset, instead of thinking about everything that’s wrong, start thinking about everything that’s right.

Give it a shot.
